Two pupils from Furzeham Primary School had the honour of recently attending a special service at All Saints Church in Brixham to celebrate 200 years of lifesaving efforts by the RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution).

The celebratory event, held at 6:45pm on Monday 4th March 2024, brought together current and retired RNLI Torbay volunteer crews, support staff, families, the Bishop of Plymouth, and other esteemed guests.

The service began with a poignant tribute as churches across Torbay joined in three minutes of Torbay bell ringing, symbolising the unity and gratitude of the community towards the RNLI's lifesaving mission. Local schools and choirs were also invited to participate, adding their voices to the celebration.

The event provided a significant opportunity to honour the dedication and bravery of the RNLI crews, both past and present, and to express the community’s heartfelt appreciation for their tireless service over the past two centuries.

It was a privilege for two Year 6 pupils to attend representing Furzeham Primary to be part of this meaningful occasion. The experience not only offered them a glimpse into the rich history of lifesaving efforts but also instilled a profound sense of pride in their community and its commitment to helping others in times of need.

Jamie, a pupil at Furzeham commented: "I really enjoyed attending the church service. It was so interesting to learn that they've saved thousands of lives."

Paul Adams, Headteacher at Furzeham Primary School said: "It was a pleasure to attend the RNLI 200-year celebratory service alongside our pupils. Brixham may be a small community, but events like this truly highlight the spirit of unity and togetherness that defines us. It's heartwarming to see everyone come together to celebrate such an important milestone."

"Bringing our pupils to events like these not only enriches their understanding of our community's history but also presents them with a sense of pride and connection to our town."

The school looks forward to continuing to engage pupils in such meaningful experiences that inspire them to make a positive difference in their community and beyond.
