Since its launch in 2007, Lanterns, Lights, and Luminations, has become one of the town’s most treasured festive traditions.
The event features live music, street entertainment, a captivating lantern parade, a vibrant street market, a Christmas light switch-on by Santa, and concludes with a spectacular fireworks display, bringing together the very best of the Brixham community year after year.
This year’s event was a true celebration of creativity, connection, and festive spirit, as hundreds of people gathered to participate in the evening’s festivities.
In the weeks leading up to the event, Sarah from Kick Up the Arts, a local arts and crafts shop in Brixham, led lantern-making workshops in local schools including Furzeham Primary School and Brixham College, both proud members of the Thinking Schools Academy Trust.
Schools embraced the opportunity to work alongside Sarah and their families in creating a beautiful collection of lanterns that would light up the Christmas parade.
“This event is such a wonderful opportunity for families to come together,” said Sarah from Kick Up the Arts.
“The lanterns this year represented little houses, symbolising the strength of our community here in Brixham. It’s heartwarming to see so many people carrying their creations with pride.”
On the night of the event, over 600 lanterns illuminated the streets as families assembled behind the Old Market House before marching together through Brixham town. The glowing procession filled the air with a sense of unity and celebration, creating a magical atmosphere for all involved.
Paul Adams, Headteacher of Furzeham Primary School and Nursery, shared his thoughts on the school’s participation:
“We are incredibly proud to take part in this year’s Lantern Parade. It is a fantastic opportunity for our school to be involved in such a cherished community event. Seeing our children and their families come together with their beautiful lanterns is truly heartwarming.”
Irea, a year 3 pupil, expressed her excitement about the parade saying:
“My favourite part is seeing all the lanterns lit up and everyone together.”
